Important Information on Conservation Efforts for WildWing’s Non-Potable Water System

Dear WildWing Residents:

Soon we will be in the 2025 growing and irrigation season, so we want to share important information about WildWing’s non-potable water system. With the community nearing full buildout, demand on this shared resource is at an all-time high.

WildWing’s non-potable water system has a limited seasonal supply of water (180 acre-feet). When lots were originally purchased and developed, each one received a specific water allocation based on the non-potable water taps purchased:

  • Estate Lots: Each owner receives 70% of 1 acre-foot (228,000 gallons) per year.
  • Patio Homes1: The homeowners’ associations (HOAs) manage non-potable water taps and allocations on behalf of residents.

1Patio homes include The Patios at WildWing, The Farmhouse Retreat at WildWing and
The Retreat

Homeowners can find their annual water allotment and year-to-date (YTD) usage on their monthly North Weld County Water District bill and online at www.NWCWD.org.

NOTE: If a property owner exceeds their allotted usage, they consume the community’s water supply more quickly, shortening the irrigation season and using water intended for their neighbors.

How You Can Help Conserve Your Water

To maximize the irrigation season and ensure sustainable water use, we encourage all residents to follow these best practices recommended by CSU Extension Services:

Adjust sprinkler run times based on seasonal water needs:

  • Spring & Fall: Once per week is generally sufficient.
  • Summer: Twice per week, or three times during extreme heat/dry periods.
  • Weekly water needs for turfgrass:
    • May: 1" | June: 1.25" | July: 1.5" | August: 1.25" | September: 1"

Water deeply and infrequently to promote strong root growth and drought tolerance.
Water between midnight and 6 a.m. to minimize evaporation.
Use the cycle-and-soak method for clay soil or slopes (multiple short irrigation cycles with soak time in between).
Avoid overwatering, as it can cause fungal diseases and shallow root growth.
Mow grass to 3-4 inches to retain moisture and shade roots.
Adjust sprinklers to avoid watering sidewalks, driveways, and landscape materials.

Recommended Watering Schedule

To ensure the system can effectively accommodate irrigation demand during optimal watering hours, we ask all residents to voluntarily follow this schedule:

Property

Watering Days

Even-Numbered Addresses, Metro District

Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday

Odd-Numbered Addresses, HOAs

Monday, Wednesday, Friday

No Irrigation on Saturday

Landscaping Considerations

WildWing features a variety of lot sizes and landscapes. Homeowners should evaluate their landscaping with their annual 228,000-gallon water allotment in mind.

  • On Colorado’s Front Range, 228,000 gallons can support ~10,000 sq. ft. of turfgrass and irrigated landscape.
  • Consider reducing “water-hungry” landscapes in favor of xeriscaping, which incorporates drought-tolerant grasses, shrubs, and bushes to lower water use.
  • Before making landscape changes, homeowners must contact:
    • WildWing Community Association (for estate lots)
    • Your HOA (for patio home communities)

Maintaining WildWing’s Common Areas

WildWing is a beautiful community with parks and open spaces that are irrigated using non-potable water. The WildWing Metropolitan District is actively seeking ways to reduce its water use, and we ask residents to help by reporting any leaks or overwatering in common areas.

📢 Report Watering Concerns:

  • Emergencies (e.g., running water): Call 970-669-3611 immediately.
  • Non-Emergencies: Email info@wildwingmd.live or call 970-617-2467.
  • Please provide: The nearest address/cross street and a photo (if possible).

Potable Water Use for Irrigation & Surcharges

Property owners considering potable water use for irrigation, be aware that NWCWD applies surcharges for exceeding contracted potable water allotments. Surcharge Rates start at $10.50 per 1,000 gallons and can go as high as $26.50 per 1,000 gallons, depending on excess usage.

Important: To prevent contamination, it is unlawful for property owners to create any cross-connection between the potable and non-potable water systems.

Your Role in Preserving Our Non-Potable Water Supply

We appreciate your support in conserving WildWing’s limited non-potable water resource. With favorable weather and strong voluntary participation in conservation efforts and the watering schedule, we hope to:

✅ Extend the irrigation season
✅ Avoid mandatory restrictions
✅ Prevent early termination of non-potable water service in 2025

Sincerely,

North Weld County Water District & WildWing Metropolitan District
